Now an undercover queen, Moremi learned the Igbos’ secrets-like that they covered themselves in dried leaves or grasses when they raided Ile-Ife. Singled out by their king for her beauty, he took her as his wife.
She learned that the raiders were not spirits of the underworld but people from a neighboring community. During the next raid, she dressed as a trader and allowed herself to be captured.
The repeated raids by these intruders began to destroy Ile-Ife’s economy.
